Sound Design for ANTLESS – Biophilic Soundscapes

13&9‘s sound design studio collaborated with ANTLESS, a startup collective that offers innovative sound experiences in workplace environments, to create Biophilic Soundscapes based on our scientific research and sound design expertise. The abstract musical pieces composed by Severin Su include the principles of fractal music concepts often found in nature’s soundscapes. The concept relates to the research about fractals in music compositions, leading to the creation of a melody sequence. The methods duplicate the same melody sequence many times, with each note playing and speeding it up, resulting in the same original melody that makes it recognizable again. Concerning fractals in music, all sounds and sound effects are programmed to follow the rules of self-similarity, creating events that create bigger events – a loop in a loop. To further mimic nature, many parameters are modulated to trigger randomness and offset, resulting in an appealing soundscape to the human ear improving health and well-being.
BIOPHILIC FIRE takes inspiration from flickering flames – crackling fire, sand, the desert wind, stone carving, and heartbeats. The biophilic composition is supported by ambient drone sounds of analog synthesizers and tubular arpeggiators, representing warmth and circularity.
BIOPHILIC AQUA interprets the sonority of water – rain, raindrops, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, marine animals and underwater sounds. Their audio is enriched with an analog synthesizer, ambient textures, and multilayered self-similar musical motives, resulting in floating, refreshing music.
BIOPHILIC WOODS translates the ambient sound of the forest – birds shrieking, insects buzzing, wood crackling, and wind blowing on leaves. This mixture of the natural environment blends with a synthesis of warm ambient pads, reverse piano-like sounds, and highly effect-processed wooden instruments, raising the relaxing effects of wandering in nature.
