RENATURATION COLLECTION AT RESIDENTIAL PROJECT
We are excited to see our first residential application of Fractal Bark, one of three fractal patterns created for Momentum Textiles & Wallcovering’s Renaturation Collection by 13&9 Design in collaboration with Fractals Research, installed in an apartment in Graz, Austria.
The existing apartment typology is characteristic of a historic Altbau and was renovated by INNOCAD architecture as an intervention that introduces a clear dialogue between old and new through clean lines and the central integration of Fractal Bark. Rooted in the timeless language of nature, the design harnesses the power of natural fractals – patterns that have surrounded and sustained us since the beginning of time. These forms are embedded in our perception and feel second nature to us: seen without looking, felt before knowing, offering subconscious cues to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect.
Seeking to recreate the calm of standing in a forest surrounded by towering trees, the 13&9 Design and Fractals Research team embedded a fractal bark motif into a composition of vertical columns. The result is a hand-drawn, repeating design that, when viewed from a distance, reads more like a natural vertical stripe than an all-over pattern. Larger central shapes gradually taper toward the edges of each column, creating a sense of rounded form and layered depth reminiscent of a tree trunk.
The application of this wallcovering in a residential interior within a dense urban context marks an important step in renaturing and welcoming the benefits of fractal patterns into smaller, individual built spaces.
