HANDCRAFTED ACOUSTICS

13&9 Design’s interdisciplinary design approach is rooted in the belief that the soul of design emerges where different disciplines intersect. Designed by 13&9 Design, BuzziPleat for BuzziSpace reflects this philosophy by reinterpreting ancient handcraft techniques through a contemporary architectural lens, resulting in a sculptural acoustic element that balances material expression, functionality, and sustainability.

As part of the 13&9 Design team, fashion and textile designer Sabrina Stadlober, collaborated in 2018 during the development of the project and added additional value of handcrafted production. Every element is individually pleated and laced by hand from BuzziFelt, a material made entirely from recycled resources.

Inspired by architectural folding principles, its geometry maximizes the surface area for exceptional acoustic performance, while the form is held together solely through the tension of its own fabrication, eliminating the need for an internal support structure. Available as wall-mounted or suspended acoustic elements, BuzziPleat Ripple and BuzziPleat Edel can also be combined with lighting, bringing together acoustic comfort and illumination in one multifunctional solution.

Its versatility allows it to be seamlessly integrated into a wide range of environments, from workplaces, hospitality venues, and restaurants to educational spaces, healthcare settings, cultural institutions, and residential interiors. By reducing reverberation while creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, BuzziPleat enhances both the performance of a space and the well-being of the people within it.
