SHEDDA FRACTAL – PENDANT LIGHTING

SHEDDA fractal, the very first serial lighting with fractal patterns – a pendant light designed for Wever & Ducré in collaboration with Prof. Richard Taylor from Fractals Research. Alongside it came SHEDDA, a variation of SHEDDA fractal: more streamlined in form, equally soft in light.

SHEDDA fractal merges aesthetics with science. Through a precisely designed perforated screen, the luminaire projects intricate fractal patterns onto the ceiling of the room, creating an interplay of light and pattern while illuminating the area below in a soft and natural light with a soothing atmosphere.

FRACTALS AND WELLBEING
Over millions of years, our eyes have evolved with the structures of nature. That‘s why fractal patterns – like those found in trees and clouds, rivers and mountains – lie within our “visual comfort zone”. Looking at them reduces stress, improves cognitive performance, and boosts well-being – much like a walk in the forest. The scientifically grounded design of SHEDDA Fractal brings nature’s health-promoting effect indoors: a mosaic of light and shadow that soothes both the eyes and the mind.

13&9 Design and Fractals Research have developed a design-science approach to adapting these patterns for human-centered built environments. Dr. Taylor’s research is on “fractal fluency,” or how the human visual system has evolved to look at fractals. His experiments show that visual complexity is the key to understanding the role of fractals in stress reduction.
