FRACTAL CODE LIGHT – ACOUSTIC OFFICE LIGHTING
BY SCIENCE DESIGN LAB – A COLLABORATION BETWEEN 13&9 Design AND FRACTALS RESEARCH FOR XAL Group
WELL-BEING AT FIRST SIGHT
FRACTAL CODE sets new standards in biophilic design by combining innovative acoustic solutions with fractal patterns. These patterns are based on the research of Prof. Dr. Richard Taylor (University of Oregon & Fractals Research, USA) and 13&9 Design, which combine design and science in a unique way. Studies show that fractal patterns reduce stress by up to 60%, increase cognitive performance and promote concentration. Discover an aesthetic solution that not only optimises room acoustics, but also increases well-being in the long term.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE CALMING EFFECT
Prof Dr Richard Taylor (University of Oregon & Fractals Research, USA) provides an initial insight into the important factors involved in making fractal patterns measurably calm our nervous system. You can find more interesting details and the full interview in our know-how article.
THE CODE OF NATURE
Over millions of years, our eyes have become familiar with the characteristic structures of nature. Fractal patterns, such as those found in trees, clouds, rivers and mountains, contribute significantly to stress reduction as they lie within our visual comfort zone.
Today, however, we spend more than 90% of our time indoors. Therefore, we partnered with Fractals Research to develop software that brings these natural, stress-reducing patterns indoors. The software converts natural patterns into a code that is precisely transferred to the acoustic panels, for a noticeable improvement in visual and acoustic room quality. By merging biophilic design principles, acoustic performance, and advanced lighting technology, FRACTAL CODE LIGHT transforms scientific insights into a functional architectural lighting solution.

BIOPHILIC FRACTAL DESIGN
Biophilic design aims to promote health and well-being by integrating natural elements into the interior and exterior built environment. Biophilia – literally meaning “nature loving” – specifically refers to a deep love of nature. The term ”biophilia” was first coined by psychoanalyst Erich Fromm.
As early as the 1960s, he observed that increasing alienation from nature as a result of industrialisation had a negative impact on mental health. In view of the ongoing urbanisation of the world‘s population, these characteristics are becoming increasingly important. Although scientists have been studying the healing properties of nature for more than fifty years, an important piece of the puzzle remained unsolved: what exactly in nature triggers these remarkable effects?

A PERFECT BALANCE
The FRACTAL CODE pattern is based on over 25 years of research in neuroscience and psychology. The degree of complexity of the pattern (the “D value”) is crucial for the stress-reducing effect—patterns that are too simple or too complex have a diminished calming effect.
The design of FRACTAL CODE was developed to achieve the perfect balance of these fractal structures. When used over large areas, for example on office walls or in spacious corridors, FRACTAL CODE unlocks its full potential. Thanks to the scientifically based design, the acoustic elements not only improve the room acoustics, but also have a positive effect on well-being due to the fractal patterns.

FRACTAL CODE LIGHT
The combined lighting and acoustic solution supports a calm, pleasant working environment with an expected stress-reducing effect thanks to fractal patterns. The luminaire provides high visual comfort thanks to standard-compliant, glare-free light (UGR ≤ 19) and excellent colour rendering (CRI ≥ 90). FRACTAL CODE LIGHT is ideal for dual workstations, above meeting tables and reception areas.
